House painting in Wylie, TX, including repaints after hail repairs

Most Wylie houses date from 2000 or later, and plenty are due for a repaint inside or out, or for fresh paint once hail repairs are done. As your house painter in Wylie, TX, I drive about 25 minutes up from Rowlett to prep, paint and clean up myself.

Wylie, TX: a boom-era city with an old downtown

Wylie sits on SH 78 between Lavon Lake and Lake Ray Hubbard, and it grew fast: 15,132 people in 2000, 41,427 in 2010 and 57,526 at the 2020 census. The Census median build year is 2006, and about three out of four homes went up in 2000 or later. On those houses, a repaint mostly means replacing caulk that has cracked at the windows and trim, and refreshing the sides that take the most sun.

Not all of Wylie is new, though. The town was incorporated in 1887, and Historic Downtown Wylie along Ballard Avenue keeps its Victorian and Craftsman architecture; the Brown House at 301 N. Ballard is now the city’s Welcome Center. A house from that era asks for more scraping, sanding and spot-priming than a 2006 subdivision house does, and more patience with the trim.

Repainting after hail damage in Wylie

Wylie knows hail. On April 11, 2016, a supercell hit the city; the National Weather Service says about 80% of homes were affected and damage topped $300 million. The storm set the NWS Fort Worth area record with a 5.25-inch hailstone. Texas led the country in 2025 with 902 of the 5,432 major hail events nationwide, per the Insurance Information Institute.

After a hailstorm, the order matters: siding, trim and fascia get repaired or replaced first, and painting comes last. New boards often arrive bare or only factory-primed, so I prime what needs it, caulk the new joints and then paint.

HOA approval and wet-weather timing for a Wylie repaint

A hail repaint is a natural time to change colors. If your house is in an HOA, that usually means an architectural review, so send in the application while the siding work is still going on. That way the approval is in hand by the time the boards are ready for paint, instead of the house sitting half-primed while you wait.

The 2016 storm hit in April, and spring is wet here too: NOAA normals make May DFW’s wettest month at 4.78 inches, with October close behind at 4.37. New wood and fresh caulk need dry days before paint, so after a rainy stretch I give the boards time to dry out, and in summer the work moves around the house as the shade does.

FAQ

Painting in Wylie: common questions

My siding and trim were just replaced after hail. How soon can you paint?

Once the repairs are finished and the surfaces are clean and dry. Factory-primed boards can usually take paint after a wash, bare wood needs primer first, and new caulk needs the cure time printed on its tube. After that it comes down to weather: no work in direct summer sun, and no painting if rain is forecast inside the four hours or so most exterior paint needs before moisture settles on it. More on my exterior painting page.

Can you paint just the boards that were replaced?

I can, but it rarely matches: the old paint has faded, and fresh paint in the same color stands out next to it. Painting the full wall, corner to corner, or the whole house hides the repair. I’m happy to price it both ways at the free estimate, and you can decide.

If I change colors after a hail repair, do I need HOA approval?

If your Wylie home is in an HOA, a new exterior color usually needs architectural approval, and the rules are in the association’s governing documents or with its management company. Submit the manufacturer, color name and code for the body, trim and doors, and wait for written approval before work starts.
